Dear Muscles,
Please don’t leave me!
Love- Everyone over 40
Here’s the bad news…Your muscles have a tendency to ghost you as you get older.
Yep. Starting around age 30 (rude), you naturally begin losing muscle mass. By the time you hit your 40s, 50s, and 60s, that process starts speeding up if you’re not doing something about it.
And no… carrying your grocery bags in one trip doesn’t count as strength training. Sorry!
“But Coach… I just want to lose weight.”
I hear this all the time. And I get it. But here’s the thing…If your only goal is to make the number on the scale smaller, you could accidentally be throwing away the very thing that’s keeping your metabolism humming.
Spoiler alert!! It’s muscle.
Think of muscle as your body’s engine. The bigger the engine, the more fuel it burns. The smaller the engine… well… let’s just say it starts feeling like your body stores calories simply by looking at a slice of pizza (we know that’s not actually how it works… but sometimes it sure feels that way).
Muscle Makes Life Easier.
Forget six-pack abs for a minute. Want to know what muscle actually helps you do?
✔ Pick up your grandkids without making weird noises.
✔ Carry all the groceries in one trip because you’re stubborn.
✔ Get off the floor without making everyone else in the room nervous.
✔ Keep your balance.
✔ Protect your bones.
✔ Burn more calories.
✔ Stay independent as you get older.
Not too shabby for something people often think is only for bodybuilders.
“I’m Too Old to Build Muscle.”
Nope! That’s one of the biggest fitness myths floating around. Your body is incredibly smart. Give it a reason to build muscle, and it will.
We’ve watched members in their 50s, 60s, and even 70s get dramatically stronger than they ever imagined. Not because they’re superhuman. Because they started.
Here’s the Catch…
Your body doesn’t really care what you used to be able to do. It responds to what you ask it to do today.
Used to run marathons? Awesome!
Used to play sports? Great!
Used to be able to squat 300 pounds? Cool!
Your muscles are interested in today, not yesterday’s résumé.
So… What Should You Actually Do?
Here’s the good news. This doesn’t require living in the gym.
Lift something heavy (for YOU) 2-4 times each week.
Heavy is relative. For some people that’s dumbbells. For others it’s bodyweight. The important part is challenging your muscles enough that they think, “Hmm… I guess we’d better stick around.”
Eat your protein.
Protein is literally what your muscles are built from. If you’re skipping it at every meal, your muscles are filing a complaint.
Keep showing up.
The secret isn’t the perfect workout. It’s the one you actually do… consistently.
Future You Is Watching.
Imagine yourself 20 years from now. Would Future You rather say:
“I’m so glad I started strength training when I did.”
Or…
“I wish I hadn’t waited so long.”
Every workout is a deposit into your future. You’re not just building stronger muscles. You’re building a body that lets you travel, play with your grandkids, climb stairs without thinking twice, and keep doing the things you love. That’s what we’re really after.
At Wicked Fitness, we don’t train people to become fitness models. We train people to become stronger humans. Because getting older is mandatory…Getting weaker doesn’t have to be.
