Every time someone talks about metabolism, there’s usually a person in the background trying to sell you a powder, tea, gummy, cleanse, or “one weird trick.” Spoiler alert: your metabolism is not broken because you forgot to drink lemon cayenne moon water at 6 a.m.
Metabolism is simply the way your body turns food into energy.
That’s it.
Your body uses calories the same way a car uses gas. You need fuel to keep everything running: breathing, digestion, circulation, thinking, moving, blinking dramatically during arguments…the whole operation.
Now, if you eat more calories than your body uses, your body stores the leftovers, mostly as fat. And sugary foods make this REALLY easy because they pack a ton of calories into tiny little delicious packages. Your brain basically goes: “Ooooh, emergency cupcake energy! Better save some for later.”
If fat loss is the goal, the basic rule is simple:
Your body needs to burn more energy than you eat.
But here’s where people get confused. Your body burns calories in three main ways, and only one of them involves burpees.
- Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
This is the calorie burn happening while you do absolutely nothing.
Yes. Existing burns calories.
Your heart is beating. Your lungs are lung-ing. Your organs are organ-ing. Your body is basically running a 24/7 factory shift even while you’re binge-watching TV wrapped in a blanket burrito.
And muscle matters here BIG time.
The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns just keeping you alive. Muscle is expensive tissue. It’s like having a giant truck instead of a scooter….it takes more fuel to operate. - Thermic Effect of Food
Your body also burns calories digesting food.
Not a huge amount, so unfortunately, eating celery does not create some magical negative-calorie loophole.
Protein and fats require a little more effort to digest than carbs, but overall, this is still a smaller piece of the puzzle. - Physical Activity
This is all movement: Workouts, walking, sports, cleaning, chasing your dog, carrying groceries in one trip to prove a point…
Movement burns calories, absolutely. But people often overestimate how much.
One intense workout does not erase an entire weekend of bottomless margaritas and “cheat meals” that somehow lasted 72 hours. Cardio is great for your heart, endurance, mood, and overall health, but the biggest long-term metabolism upgrade comes from building muscle. That’s where strength training enters like the main character.
When you build muscle, your body burns more calories ALL the time…..not just during workouts. Even when you’re sitting around answering emails.
Here’s a simple example: Let’s say your body burns 1,000 calories a day at rest, and you eat 1,500 calories daily. Even with some exercise, you might still be storing extra energy.
Now imagine you build muscle and raise your resting calorie burn to 1,200 calories a day.
Suddenly, your body is using more energy around the clock without you having to live on lettuce and sadness.
That difference may seem small, but over time it adds up in a big way.
Another cool bonus: after strength training, your body keeps burning energy while your muscles repair and rebuild. Your metabolism doesn’t just clock out the second you leave the gym.
So, if you want the short version of how to support fat loss and improve metabolism, here it is:
- Lift weights or do resistance training
- Ease up on the sugar overload
- Stop looking for magical metabolism hacks invented by influencers holding detox tea
No miracle drink, vinegar shot, wrap, cleanse, or “fat-melting” gummy replaces the basics.
Your metabolism isn’t a mystery.
It just likes muscle.
